ODIHAM MUMMERS
We can't tell you who we are but we can tell you a story with Father Christmas, King George and plenty of stick fighting....whilst raising money for good causes.
WHO ARE THE ODIHAM MUMMERS?Can't tell you...sorry. What we can tell you is that these short plays go back hundreds of years. Historically farm workers would perform this play to the gentry to try and raise a bit of extra cash when they were laid off over the winter months.
"Begging" was illegal, so the plays were performed in heavy disguise so prevent the participants from being identified. The Odiham version of the play has been a feature of Odiham life (on and off) for centuries. Traditionally it takes place at several venues on Boxing Day (although we may sometimes be seen at other festivities) with the fabulous array of head wear being passed round at the end of each performance to raise money for local charities. See our CHARITY FUNDRAISING page for more details of this year's charity. It is worth watching more than one performance as the script tends to change a little from the first venue (pub) to the last!
